Suspected gunman detained after Target shooting in Austin kills 3, injures others

Police in Austin, Texas, say they’ve detained a suspect after three people were killed in a shooting at a Target Monday afternoon. According to Austin-Travis County EMS, several others were also injured in the shooting.
Austin Police Department Chief Lisa Davis said police were called to a shooting just after 2 p.m. She said the suspect left the scene in a stolen car before he wrecked that car and then stole another. According to KVUE-TV, officers later took the man into custody.
In a post on social media, police previously said the suspect was seen wearing a “floral shirt” and khaki shorts. Davis described him as a 32-year-old man with a history of mental health issues.
According to emergency service officials, at least three people are dead. Officials said two died in the parking lot, while the other died at the hospital. Emergency crews also treated a fourth person for unrelated injuries.
According to KVUE, Austin police initially reported a child was injured in the shooting. However, they have not provided an update on that information.
In a post on X, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson condemned the attack and praised the city’s police force for their quick response.
“This is a devastating situation, and my heart is with the victims and their families. While this remains an active and ongoing investigation, what I’ll say is that this was a sickening, cowardly act of gun violence,” Watson said. “I am grateful for the quick response of our APD officers and other first responders and want to thank them for their actions to apprehend the suspect.”
Police officials said the scene remains active and the investigation is ongoing.
This is a developing story.
