Full Story

A federal grand jury in New York indicted 26-year-old Luigi Mangione on four federal counts tied to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. According to federal court filings and law enforcement officials, the charges include murder with a firearm, another firearms-related offense, and two counts of stalking.

If convicted, Mangione could face the death penalty. He also faces separate state charges in New York and Pennsylvania.

How did the attack unfold?

Authorities alleged that Mangione traveled to New York in late November 2024 and checked into a hostel under a false identity. On the morning of Dec. 4, he allegedly stalked and shot Thompson in the back outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel, where the CEO was scheduled to attend an investor meeting.

Authorities said Mangione allegedly fled on a bicycle into Central Park, then took a cab to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station. Police arrested Mangione five days later at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

What evidence has been presented in the case?

Prosecutors claimed Mangione carried a 3D-printed “ghost gun” with a suppressor at the time of his arrest, which investigators believed to be the murder weapon. Police recovered shell casings at the scene with the words “delay,” “deny” and “depose” written in Sharpie.

CBS News and NBC News reported that investigators found no connection between Mangione and UnitedHealthcare.

Where does the death penalty case stand?

Attorney General Pam Bondi directed prosecutors on April 1 to pursue the death penalty against Mangione in the case. According to court filings cited by Fox News, Mangione’s attorneys argued that Bondi’s public Instagram post announcing the death penalty showed prejudicial and political motivation.

They claimed the Justice Department bypassed standard procedures that give defense teams time to present arguments against capital punishment.

His attorneys asked the court to block a death penalty filing, but prosecutors argued it was premature. No formal notice has been submitted yet.

What comes next in the legal process?

Mangione, who pleaded not guilty, will face arraignment on the federal charges soon. He continues to face parallel prosecutions, including a New York state terrorism-related murder charge and additional counts in Pennsylvania. Prosecutors have indicated the state trial may proceed before the federal case.
