U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emerged from negotiations in Paris on Friday, April 18, declaring that the United States might walk away from brokering peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in a matter of days if progress is not made. Rubio made the remarks after meeting with European and Ukrainian leaders.
Who was part of the peace talks ?
French President Emmanuel Macron hosted the talks as the Trump administration continues to try to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has now lasted more than three years.
Rubio also reportedly spoke on the phone with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov. The State Department then said that the U.S. presented all parties with outlines of a durable and lasting peace.
What did he say specifically ?
Rubio said the Trump administration had worked for more than 80 days to repeatedly make efforts to bring an end to the war. He added the administration has now reached a point where it must decide whether that’s possible or not.
“I’m talking about a matter of days, not a matter of weeks whether or not this a war that can be ended,” Rubio said. “If it’s not possible, if we are so far apart that this is not going to happen, then I think the president is probably at a point where he is going to say, we’re done. “
Were there any other developments ?
Rubio’s remarks came after Ukraine announced it had agreed to a minerals deal with the United States. Ukraine’s Minister of Economic Development and Trade said both sides had signed a memorandum or intent.
President Donald Trump has been pushing for such a deal to get access to developing Ukraine’s rare earth minerals, and other natural resources, as compensation for billions of dollars in aid that the United States has provided to Ukraine, throughout the war.
