Newly released body camera footage shows deputies evacuating people and searching for a gunman who killed a woman at a Citibank office complex in Tampa, Florida. An armed security guard shot the suspect during an exchange of gunfire.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office released the footage Wednesday evening, showing deputies arriving at Sabal Center, moving people out of the building and searching for the shooter. Deputies found the suspect in the cafeteria after he had been shot by a Citibank security guard.

Chief Deputy Frank Losat said at a briefing that multiple 911 calls about shots being fired at the complex came in at approximately 12:11 p.m. The first marked patrol unit arrived and deputies entered the building one minute later.

The suspect had driven a small four-door sedan over several medians, across a grassy area and through a secured fence before crashing into an outdoor seating area where people were having lunch, Losat said.

After the car stopped, the suspect got out with a rifle, approached a woman and shot her. Losat confirmed that she died.

At 12:15 p.m., four minutes after the initial emergency call, an armed Citibank security guard confronted the suspect in the cafeteria. Both fired their weapons, and the suspect was shot.

The suspect was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he died. Neither the woman nor the suspect were identified at the briefing.

“The security guard that’s employed by Citibank stopped the threat,” Losat said. “Was there potential for further violence? Absolutely.”

Four other people were treated at a local hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening. Losat did not specify how they were injured.

About 3,200 Citibank employees were on the property at the time of the shooting. About 367 sheriff’s deputies responded, including command staff, detectives and tactical teams, alongside local, state and federal agencies.

It took approximately two and a half hours from the first 911 call to clear the complex, which was described at the briefing as six or seven buildings, each three stories tall. Officers searched every room, including locked rooms, before securing the property.

Asked whether the attack was targeted, the chief deputy said investigators were still working through the circumstances. He also confirmed that video circulating of a masked person carrying a rifle showed the suspect.

Investigators expected witness interviews to continue into the night and processing of the indoor and outdoor crime scenes to take several hours, possibly into the following day.
