U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke, his office announced. The 53-year-old Democrat is awake and alert, and his staff is optimistic he will make a full recovery.

Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm Saturday afternoon while attending his son’s hockey game, his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said in a statement Sunday. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered a stroke.

“He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment,” Herwitt said. “The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery.”

Murphy remains at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. His office did not specify the type of stroke, the treatment he received or when he might be discharged.

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or a blood vessel in the brain ruptures.

Sudden arm numbness or weakness is among the warning signs, along with difficulty speaking, vision changes and loss of balance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Rapid treatment can reduce brain damage.

Murphy has served in the Senate since January 2013 and was reelected to a third term in 2024. He previously served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.

He became a prominent advocate for tighter gun laws following the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, which was part of his congressional district.
