Four Italian personnel were killed and 11 others were injured after a military helicopter crashed during a training flight in Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to the European Union peacekeeping force.

The CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed Thursday evening in the Gorice area near Brčko, a city in northern Bosnia, the European Union Force (EUFOR) said in a statement. There were 15 people on board.

Two members of the Italian armed forces and two members of the Italian Military Red Cross were killed, according to EUFOR. Two of the injured were taken to a medical facility in Tuzla, while the other nine are receiving treatment in Brčko. All are in stable condition.

Video of the crash shows the twin-rotor helicopter spinning at low altitude before it hits the ground and breaks apart.

Italy’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that it was sending an Italian medical team to assist the injured.

“In this moment of immense pain, my thoughts go first and foremost to the families of our fallen, to whom I express my personal condolences and those of the entire Defense Ministry,” Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said.

The helicopter was taking part in Operation Althea, an EU-led military mission launched in 2004 to help maintain security in Bosnia following the 1995 peace agreement that ended the country’s war.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to the Italian Defense Ministry.
