One person was killed and five others injured in a shooting across Trappes and La Verrière in the Yvelines region of France on Friday. Authorities are investigating the attacks as a suspected terrorist crime with a possible racist motive.

The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Kevin T., was arrested in the nearby town of Coignières, according to BFMTV. He allegedly opened fire from his car at several locations, including a bus stop, Louis Pergaud Square and an Esso gas station in Trappes, before continuing to La Verrière.

The man killed was identified as 26-year-old Pengo Bossio Wangi. The five injured include a 12-year-old girl who was seriously wounded and later transferred to intensive care, according to Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh. Three other injured people were men aged 20, 29 and 47, while officials reported a fifth injured victim at another location.

France’s National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation. The suspect is being investigated on suspicion of murder and attempted murder connected to a terrorist enterprise, with an alleged racial, ethnic, national or religious motive.

Prosecutors said the suspect had previous convictions that had been fully served or otherwise rehabilitated. He was not listed in France’s national security watchlist, according to the prosecutor’s office, but was known for ordinary criminal offenses. Investigators are also examining reports that gas canisters were found during a search of his apartment.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack as racist and terrorist in nature, expressing support for the victims and their families. He said the country stood with those affected and reiterated his opposition to racism.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet established a full account of the suspect’s motive.
