Police give all-clear after suspicious package investigation in St. Marys, Georgia
Police have given the all-clear after investigating a suspicious package in downtown St. Marys, Georgia, saying no device was found. One person is in custody, and officers are working to reopen roads.
The St. Marys Police Department first reported a suspicious package call on St. Marys Street at about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. About 15 minutes later, police described it as an “active incident” and told residents and visitors to avoid the surrounding downtown area.
Assistant City Manager Charlie Williams told First Coast News, WTLV/WJXX, that a man had been detained and a suspicious package was found in his vehicle. Police K-9s alerted to the package, and officers established a cordon around the car.
Williams also told reporters that the package tested “positive,” although it was unclear what it tested positive for. The subsequent police update did not explain that result.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) responded after police requested its bomb squad. Authorities asked people to avoid the entire area within the perimeter formed by Ready Street, St. Marys Street, Conyers Street and Bartlett Street.
“The all-clear is announced. No device was found,” police said in their latest update. “We have a subject in custody.”
Police said they were getting the roads reopened and that the incident remains under investigation.
