An Arizona man has been sentenced to over three years in federal prison for threatening to kill Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, according to prosecutors.

Rene Ortiz, 56, of Casa Grande, Arizona, was sentenced to 38 months in prison, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona announced on Thursday.

On November 5, 2024, Election Day, the suspect delivered a written threat to the federal courthouse in Phoenix targeting Trump and Harris, who were running for president at the time.

The threat described an intent to “execute the newly elected [President of the United States] by firing an M-16A2 service rifle with a magazine of 6 rounds,” prosecutors said.

After Trump won the election, the suspect delivered a second threat to the federal courthouse in Tucson on November 25. It threatened to shoot “the incoming fraudulent elected [President of the United States]” at the January 20, 2025, inauguration.

When interviewed by the U.S. Secret Service, the suspect repeated his intent to make the threats, according to prosecutors. He was arrested on January 17, 2025, ahead of the inauguration.

A federal jury convicted him on June 8 of two felony counts of making threats against successors to the presidency and one felony count of making threats against former presidents.

The Secret Service investigated the case with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service.
