A person inside a vehicle was seriously injured when they were hit by part of a plane experiencing a mechanical failure in Indiana, according to local officials. The aircraft later made an emergency landing.

Emergency crews responded at about 3:05 p.m. on Sunday after dispatchers received a report that someone in a vehicle had been injured by an aircraft, according to the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office. The person was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The sheriff said the plane was able to take off despite the mechanical problem. Authorities coordinated an emergency landing while the pilot burned off fuel before returning to Evansville Regional Airport. The pilot was not injured.

Officials confirmed that the aircraft had broken landing gear. WFIE reported that a reporter at the airport saw what appeared to be a matching broken piece of the plane’s landing gear.

It was not immediately clear whether the landing gear was the part that struck the person in the vehicle. The circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.
