The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) says a cybercriminal accessed department records in September, potentially exposing driver license information, motor vehicle data, document images and other personal information.

The department said the unauthorized access occurred on Sept. 4, 2026, using compromised credentials. The incident was attributed to an international cybercriminal organization, according to the department’s breach notice.

FLHSMV said it took immediate steps to contain the breach, including blocking unauthorized access, resetting affected credentials and implementing additional security measures. The investigation is being conducted in coordination with the Florida Digital Service and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

“At this time, FLHSMV has no evidence indicating that information has been misused,” the department said in its public notice.

The agency will send letters to current driver license and identification card holders whose information may have been affected. It has also partnered with Sontiq Inc., a TransUnion company, to provide eligible individuals with one year of complimentary identity and credit monitoring, along with $1 million in identity theft insurance.

People who previously held a Florida driver license, identification card or vehicle title but no longer have a valid card or current mailing address may not receive a letter. Those individuals can contact the department for more information.

FLHSMV recommends that potentially affected individuals review financial statements and credit reports, monitor online accounts for suspicious activity, and consider placing a fraud alert or security freeze with the major credit bureaus.

The department also directed residents to the Federal Trade Commission’s IdentityTheft.gov data breach resource for additional guidance.
