New ransom message in Nancy Guthrie case deemed not credible
Authorities in Arizona have determined that a new possible ransom message in the Nancy Guthrie case is not credible, according to officials. Authorities are warning that scammers may try to exploit the investigation.
The joint Pima County Sheriff’s Office and FBI task force learned of the message on Monday. In an update on Tuesday, the sheriff’s office described it as a text message and said investigators had reviewed it and found it lacked credibility.
The agency had initially announced that investigators were examining a possible ransom note and related social media comments to determine whether it was genuine.
Guthrie, the mother of NBC “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her home in the Tucson area earlier this year. Authorities have been investigating her disappearance as an abduction.
The sheriff’s office asked anyone who receives a text or other communication related to Guthrie to report it to law enforcement.
“Do not send money or provide personal information in response to unsolicited messages,” the agency said.
Investigators will continue checking reported messages and examining potential extortion attempts. The sheriff’s office said the investigation into Guthrie’s disappearance remains active.
