Three people were killed and four others were injured after a driver of a stolen car carrying seven people crashed into a tractor-trailer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, according to police. The four survivors, all teenagers, were hospitalized with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Officers responded at about 4:12 a.m. on Tuesday to the crash on Southeast Fourth Street at the Interstate 35W exit ramp, according to the Minneapolis Police Department. They found seven people trapped inside a stolen Hyundai Elantra.

Police said in an update that the Elantra was traveling west on Southeast Fourth Street when it struck the trailer of a truck traveling south from the exit ramp and crossing the street.

The car became lodged beneath the trailer. Both vehicles stopped on Ninth Avenue Southeast between Southeast Fourth Street and University Avenue Southeast.

Two males in the front seats and a female in the rear seat died at the scene. Firefighters extricated four other passengers from the rear seat: two 18-year-old men, a 17-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy. All four were taken by ambulance to Hennepin Healthcare.

Their identities will be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Investigators believe the stolen car’s speed contributed to the crash. The truck driver was not injured and cooperated with officers.

The southbound Interstate 35W exit to Southeast Fourth Street and Ninth Avenue Southeast were closed for several hours while traffic investigators and forensic personnel examined the scene. Police are continuing to investigate the events leading to the collision.
