Former Colorado deputy charged in police facility shootings
A former Colorado sheriff’s deputy has been charged after opening fire at his former workplace and police vehicles at a police department, according to officials. He also faces a charge of assaulting an officer at the jail after being taken into custody.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) announced the charges on Monday against 40-year-old Tyler Boyd Reilly following overnight shootings at its headquarters at 5600 Flatiron Parkway in Boulder and at the Broomfield Police Department, northwest of Denver.
Charges stemming from the headquarters shooting include attempted first-degree burglary, felony menacing with a deadly weapon, attempted criminal trespass and criminal mischief involving damage between $2,000 and $5,000.
The suspect also faces charges of resisting an officer, prohibited use of weapons, reckless endangerment and obstructing governmental operations.
The Broomfield charges include criminal mischief involving damage between $100,000 and $1 million, prohibited use of weapons, reckless endangerment, obstructing governmental operations and second-degree criminal trespass.
A separate charge of second-degree assault on a peace officer causing bodily injury stems from an incident at the Boulder County Jail after his arrest. Officials have not released details about that encounter or the officer’s injuries.
The investigation began at about 12:02 a.m. on Monday when a man called the sheriff’s communications center and reported experiencing anxiety. A second call came six minutes later, during which threats were made against the sheriff’s headquarters and jail as the call was being transferred to police in Westminster, where it originated.
Deputies identified the caller as the former employee and began searching for him. Officers were stationed at the headquarters, jail and communications facilities, all of which had staff inside.
The suspect later arrived at the headquarters armed with an AR-15-style rifle and fired multiple rounds into the entrance. He failed to get inside and was arrested on the sidewalk outside the front door.
Authorities also linked him to gunfire directed at several police vehicles at the Broomfield Police Department. Sheriff Curtis Johnson said no employees were injured during either shooting and no officers fired their weapons.
“This incident that occurred could have been significantly worse than it was,” Sheriff Johnson said at a briefing.
The suspect began working at the Boulder County Jail in 2012 and moved to patrol in 2023. He resigned in May 2024 rather than be fired for cause, Johnson said. The sheriff did not disclose the reason but said the conduct investigated did not involve an offense that would disqualify him from police certification.
The sheriff’s office is investigating both shootings as one case. A motive has not been established, and officials said the charges could change as the investigation continues.
