Former Colorado sheriff’s deputy arrested after firing shots at police stations
A former Colorado sheriff’s deputy who was forced to resign from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office more than two years ago was arrested Monday after opening fire at his former workplace and the Broomfield Police Department. No one was injured.
The investigation began at around 12:02 a.m. on Monday when 40-year-old Tyler Boyd Reilly, a former Boulder County Sheriff’s Office deputy who worked in both the jail and patrol divisions, called 911 and reported anxiety. While being transferred to the Westminster Police Department, he began making a number of threats.
Those threats included the facilities of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, including the Boulder County Jail at 3200 Airport Road and the Sheriff’s Office headquarters at 5600 Flatiron Parkway, both in Bouldewr.
“Sheriff’s Office personnel were notified, and efforts began to locate Reilly,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release. Because of the threats, deputies were staged at the Headquarters, Jail and Communications campuses as a precautionary measure.
About an hour later, at 1:08 a.m., Reilly was spotted at the front door of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office headquarters while armed with an AR-15 style rifle. He fired multiple rounds at the entrance but did not gain entry and no one was hit.
“Deputies confronted Reilly outside the Headquarters entryway and took him into custody without incident,” the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators later found that Reilly was also suspected of stopping at the Broomfield Police Department, where he fired multiple rounds at police vehicles. No one was injured at that location either.
The motive for the shootings was not immediately known.
