A 17-year-old student was shot and killed near his high school in Houston, Texas, according to officials. Police are searching for the shooter and interviewing witnesses.

The shooting was reported at about 8:21 a.m. on Friday at the dead end of Dryad Street, just outside Westbury High School, according to Houston Independent School District Police Chief Shamara D. Garner. The victim was a senior at the school.

A campus officer reported hearing shots and went to the scene. A school staff member who teaches firefighting also responded and performed lifesaving measures at about 8:24 a.m., Garner said. The teenager died at the scene, off school property.

Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz said preliminary information indicated that a group of teenagers had gathered at the end of the street when someone approached from a wooded area near another complex. Words were exchanged before someone produced a handgun and shot the student.

Homicide investigators are interviewing two witnesses and pursuing leads, including video footage. Diaz said license plate readers are also located throughout the surrounding community.

“We do have an idea of who we’re looking for,” Diaz said.

The school was not placed on lockdown, and officials say students and staff are safe. Classes are continuing while authorities work nearby.

The killing follows another fatal shooting near a Houston-area high school on Tuesday. A teenage student at Westfield High School, part of the Spring Independent School District, was shot near that campus and later died at a hospital.
