Portland police K9 shot and killed on last shift before retirement
A police dog was shot and killed on his final shift before retirement in Portland, Oregon, according to officials. A homicide suspect also died in the shooting during an attempted arrest.
The shooting happened at about 1:45 p.m. on Thursday near Southeast 97th Avenue and Southeast Oak Street in the Hazelwood neighborhood, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
K9 Kylo was wounded and taken to an animal hospital, where he passed away. He had served with the bureau for six years.
“Today was scheduled to be his last shift,” the bureau said in a statement released Thursday night. The suspect died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts, and a firearm was recovered.
The arrest attempt followed an investigation into the killing of 60-year-old Jeff Thompson, who was shot to death inside his home in the 17900 block of Southeast Market Street earlier this week.
Gresham police said detectives used footage from public safety cameras in nearby Vance Park and data from automatic license plate readers to help identify a suspect. Authorities located him near a motel in southeast Portland and requested help from the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force.
The suspect fled as task force members attempted to take him into custody, and a shooting followed, fatally wounding both him and Kylo. The man died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts, and officers recovered a firearm.
Officials have not identified the suspect or said who fired the shot that killed Kylo.
Preliminary information indicates that two Portland officers and two officers from other agencies were involved in the shooting. The Portland officers have been placed on paid administrative leave under bureau policy while the investigation continues.
