Trump says he must choose between Iran deal and annihilating the country
President Trump said he has “a big decision to make” between reaching a deal with Iran and annihilating the Islamic Republic. He said he expects an agreement after the U.S. midterm elections.
Trump made the comments on Tuesday during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he questioned what he should do next regarding the ongoing war with Iran.
“Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before?” Trump said. “Maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East, or even the world.”
“Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again?” he said. “Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations?”
“But I believe we’ll make a deal right after the election, because it doesn’t make sense for them not to,” he said. “They’re waiting to see how I do in the midterm election. What they don’t realize is that I’m not running.”
Trump said he would help Republican candidates but would not let the election affect his decisions on Iran.
“When it comes to Iran, it doesn’t even enter my mind,” he said. “The only thing that does is that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.”
Earlier in the speech, Trump said Iran had rejected offers of economic cooperation in exchange for ending its nuclear program and support for terrorism. He claimed Operation Midnight Hammer had destroyed Iran’s nuclear program and said Tehran again refused to make a deal afterward.
He also claimed Operation Epic Fury had destroyed all 159 ships in Iran’s navy, its air force and most of its missile and drone manufacturing capacity.
Trump accused Iran of violating a ceasefire for nuclear discussions by attacking civilian ships.
“I call on all nations to join us in enforcing the complete economic isolation of Iran,” Trump said. “Until they stop their attacks on commercial shipping, relinquish their nuclear ambitions, and cease their support of terror.”
