Trump tells Mexico to reclaim control, says cartel members should be killed or detained for life
President Trump said Mexico must reclaim control of its territory from drug cartels. He compared the cartels to ISIS and said their members should be killed, exiled or detained without the possibility of release.
Trump made the comments on Tuesday during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he described Mexico as “the epicenter of the cartel violence.”
“Unfortunately, it’s unacceptable for the United States to share a 2,000-mile border with a territory controlled by cartels, so Mexico must reclaim control of its soil from the enemies of humanity,” he said.
Trump said he had designated drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations upon taking office and “unleashed the United States Armed Forces to eliminate them.”
“The cartels are the ISIS of the Western Hemisphere,” Trump added. “Like ISIS, they should be killed, exiled, or detained as enemy combatants without the possibility of release, which is what we’re doing.”
Later in the address, Trump said his administration had a good relationship with the Mexican government and had made progress working with it.
“I’m very proud to tell you we have a very good relationship with the Mexican government,” he said. “We’ve made great strides, very great strides with Mexico. They don’t want the cartels either.”
“Communism will never be coming to America, but freedom will be coming to Cuba, and safety and security will be coming to Mexico,” Trump said.
