11 students shot outside high school in Turkey, 15-year-old suspect detained
Eleven students were shot outside a high school in western Turkey, leaving two seriously injured, according to officials. A 15-year-old student was detained after trying to flee.
The shooting happened on Tuesday morning outside a vocational and technical high school in Turgutlu, a district of Manisa province. The governor’s office said authorities received a report of gunfire near the school at 7:59 a.m. and dispatched police and medical teams.
HaberTurk reported that the suspect, a student at the school, fired randomly near the building before attempting to escape on foot. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said the attack took place on a street students use to reach the school.
All 11 injured students were transported to hospital. Two are seriously injured, Gürlek said. Officials have not provided further details about their injuries.
Security camera footage showed the alleged attacker walking down a street carrying a weapon. Another video showed him running while still holding it, according to the Associated Press.
The suspect was quickly apprehended, officials said. His parents and grandfather were also taken into custody as investigators examined how he obtained the weapon and whether it had been properly secured.
AP reported that the shotgun belonged to the grandfather and had been taken from the grandparents’ home. Gürlek said investigators are also examining the parents’ care and supervision responsibilities.
The motive remains unknown. Prosecutors are investigating allegations that the suspect had been bullied before the shooting, but officials have not established whether bullying played a role in the attack.
