Illinois man sentenced to prison for threatening to kill immigration authorities
An Illinois man has been sentenced to a year in federal prison for threatening to kill federal immigration authorities in a social media post, according to prosecutors.
Michael D. Stover, 34, of Park Forest, a suburb south of Chicago, was sentenced earlier this month, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois announced on Tuesday. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to transmitting a threat in interstate commerce.
The suspect posted the threat on Bluesky on July 7, 2025, calling for immigration authorities to be killed “to the absolute last one” and adding: “Kill their friends and families too.”
“Hurt the people and get hunted like a rat until your last desperate minutes, which will be slow if I can help it,” the post said.
In a plea declaration, the suspect acknowledged that the message threatened immigration authorities and that he understood how it would be viewed.
Prosecutors said he had previously posted similar messages advocating violence against government officials, including posts in which he wore face paint and displayed a rifle.
“Threats of violence cause real harm,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn McCarthy wrote in the government’s sentencing memorandum. “They instill fear, disrupt lives, and undermine society’s sense of security.”
