Gunman opens fire into crowd of 400 juveniles near St. Louis; suspect shot by police
A gunman opened fire into a crowd at a gathering of about 400 juveniles near St. Louis, Missouri, injuring two people before being shot by police, according to officials. Police said he was firing what appeared to be an automatic firearm.
The shooting happened at about 10:22 p.m. on Saturday in the 3500 block of Adie Road in St. Ann, a suburb of St. Louis, according to the St. Ann Police Department. Officers were responding to reports of gunfire when they saw a suspect firing multiple rounds into the crowd from what appeared to be an automatic firearm.
Officers pursued the suspect on foot as he ran toward the side of a nearby home, where bystanders were taking cover.
Police said the suspect turned toward the officers while holding the firearm and refused commands to stop. Police then shot him.
Officers began providing emergency medical care and continued until the suspect was taken to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition. No officers were injured.
Authorities determined that two people had been struck by the suspect’s gunfire. Their conditions were not immediately available, and police did not release their ages or identify the suspect.
The Maryland Heights Police Department has taken over the investigation into the police shooting.
