Milwaukee officer injured, suspect killed after exchange of gunfire during pursuit
A man was killed after an exchange of gunfire with police following a vehicle pursuit in Milwaukee, according to officials. An officer was injured but later released from the hospital.
The incident began at about 5:50 p.m. Tuesday when Milwaukee officers near North 39th Street and West Meinecke Avenue spotted a car matching the description of one wanted in a shots-fired investigation in nearby Glendale, according to the Milwaukee Police Department. The driver fled from officers, leading to a pursuit.
The car stopped in the 2500 block of North 37th Street and two suspects ran away. One escaped, while an officer chased the other man to the 2400 block of North 37th Street.
Police Chief Jeffrey B. Norman said at a briefing that the officer gave the suspect several commands to get on the ground before a brief struggle. Officials believe two shots were fired but were still working to determine the sequence of events.
“We believe that the suspect fired his gun,” Norman said.
The suspect died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts by police and Milwaukee Fire Department personnel. Police said his firearm was in his hand, another gun was found in his waistband and a third was recovered from the vehicle.
The officer, a 35-year-old man with more than three years of service, was treated for a non-life threatening injury and released. The exact nature of the injury remains under investigation.
The second suspect is being sought in connection with the Glendale shots-fired investigation. Police have leads on the person’s whereabouts.
