Thunder mistaken for gunfire puts schools on lockdown near Houston
Several schools in Magnolia, Texas, briefly went into lockdown after a teacher at an elementary school mistook a clap of thunder for gunfire, according to officials. There were no shots fired and no students or employees were threatened.
The report was made shortly before 1 p.m. at Willie E. Williams Elementary School in Montgomery County, northwest of Houston. The teacher was in an interior classroom and was not aware that a thunderstorm had moved into the area when the loud thunderclap was heard.
Deputies from the Montgomery County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office and sheriff’s office, along with state troopers and local police and fire personnel, arrived within minutes and began clearing the campus.
Authorities quickly located the teacher who made the 911 call and confirmed there was no active threat. All rooms at the school were cleared as a precaution before classes resumed at 1:03 p.m.
Magnolia Independent School District said its alert system also placed neighboring schools on lockdown, but they have since reopened. Precinct 5 deputies will remain at Williams Elementary for the rest of the day to assist with student pickup.
