D.C. police officer dies after gunshot wound at police station

A Washington, D.C., police officer has died after suffering a gunshot wound inside a police station, according to officials. Early information indicates that the officer may have shot themself.

The shooting happened at about 5 a.m. Monday at the Metropolitan Police Department’s Second District station in the 3300 block of Idaho Avenue Northwest, according to MPD. The officer was taken to a hospital in critical condition but later died.

Police have not released the circumstances of the shooting. An MPD spokesperson said that “nothing currently indicates that another party was involved.”

WUSA9 reported that the officer apparently shot themself, but authorities have not said whether the shooting was accidental or what the officer was doing at the time.

MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating.
