Norway’s King Harald’s health worsens over weekend

King Harald V’s health worsened over the weekend while he was hospitalized in Oslo, the Norwegian royal palace said Sunday. The 89-year-old monarch is being treated with antibiotics for a bloodstream infection and is in stable condition.

Harald will remain at Rikshospitalet, Norway’s national hospital in Oslo, and is on medical leave indefinitely. The palace said he has responded to the antibiotic treatment.

The king was admitted on Monday after developing fluid retention while receiving cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia, a blood disorder.

Crown Prince Haakon, the king’s son and heir, is serving as regent during his father’s illness.

Harald has been Norway’s king since 1991. Norway is a constitutional monarchy, meaning the king is head of state while the elected government runs the country.
