Mother, 2-year-old son killed in lightning strike in South Florida
A woman and her 2-year-old son were killed after they were struck by lightning in Margate, Florida, according to police.
Margate police and fire rescue crews responded at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday after receiving a 911 call about two people who had been struck by lightning and were lying on a sidewalk near 7941 NW 1st Street, in the South Florida city northwest of Fort Lauderdale.
Officers and paramedics immediately began CPR. The woman, identified as 40-year-old Kenya Glasgow, was taken to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach. Her son was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, accompanied by a police escort.
Both were pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospitals, despite life-saving efforts by first responders and medical personnel.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), lightning strikes kill an average of 20 people each year in the United States and injure hundreds more. Some survivors are left with long-term neurological effects.
So far in 2026, 11 lightning-related deaths have been reported in the United States, including four in Florida, two in Wisconsin , and one each in Utah, Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey and North Carolina.
