A man was found dead inside a home in Oakland, Tennessee, where authorities also found what appeared to be a pipe bomb, according to officials.

The incident began at about 7 a.m. on Saturday when police were called to a home on Chestnut Ridge near Highway 194, on the south side of Oakland. The man’s mother had called authorities after finding her son dead inside the home, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

When officers arrived, they found what appeared to be a pipe bomb in the man’s room, the sheriff’s office said. Oakland Police Chief Larry Gaines confirmed to WREG that a device was found inside the home but said authorities were still investigating.

About 40 homes were evacuated following the discovery, WREG reported. Multiple law enforcement agencies remain at the scene, and police said the area is expected to remain active for an extended period.

Roads near Chestnut Ridge and Highway 194 have been closed, and police have asked people to avoid the area and use another route if they need to travel through the south side of Oakland.
