Seven people, including two police officers, were killed after a car drove the wrong way on a major road in northeastern England and collided with a police vehicle, according to authorities.

The crash happened at about 3:39 a.m. on Saturday on the A66 at South Bank, near Middlesbrough in Cleveland, England, according to police. A Volkswagen Passat was traveling against traffic when it collided with a marked Cleveland Police armed-response vehicle that was traveling in the correct direction.

Police Constable Matthew Blades, 37, and Police Constable Tom Clough, 38, died at the scene. The five people inside the Passat were also killed.

Cleveland Police said the crash is being investigated and formal identification has been completed for the occupants of the Passat. Their identities were not released.

The force has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, the police watchdog for England and Wales, as is required after a death connected to a police incident. The agency will investigate the circumstances of the crash.
