2 workers killed in explosion at plant in Toledo, Ohio
Two workers have been killed in an explosion and fire at an industrial facility in Toledo, Ohio, according to authorities. The blast happened during a shift change.
The incident happened at about 4:50 a.m. Tuesday at Brent Industries on South Avenue, where 911 callers reported an explosion and a heavy fire, according to Toledo Fire Chief Allison Armstrong. Firefighters arrived to find part of the building had already collapsed.
Officials said the building contained chemicals, making the response a hazardous materials operation. Fire crews were also told that people might be trapped inside the building.
Two employees, an adult man and an adult woman, could not initially be accounted for. Firefighters found the woman several hours later and then found the man inside the building. Both had died from their injuries.
The fire was still being fought Tuesday afternoon, with a damaged portion of the roof at risk of collapsing. Firefighters were using ladder trucks and other master streams to reach areas that could not be safely accessed from inside the building.
No firefighters were injured. Two or three other employees suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, but no one was believed to have been taken to a hospital.
Toledo fire investigators, police detectives and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are investigating the cause of the explosion. The EPA said early air monitoring did not detect hazardous contaminants, and no runoff had been found in a ditch leading to a nearby creek.
