Atlanta officer shot, woman injured during mental health call
An Atlanta police officer was shot in the arm and a woman was injured when a man opened fire during a response to a mental health call, according to authorities. The suspect was taken into custody.
The shooting happened at about 8:45 a.m. Monday at a home at 1429 Clark Howard Lane SW in Atlanta. Officers were called after a 911 caller reported that a man with a gun was experiencing a mental health crisis.
When officers entered the home, they spoke with the 911 caller in a hallway. A man later identified as Michael Gates, 24, then appeared in the hallway holding a gun, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
The suspect opened fire and injured an officer before police returned fire. A woman who lives at the home was also injured during the incident.
Gates was not injured and was immediately taken into custody. A woman who lives at the home was also injured during the incident.
The officer was identified as DeVante Matthews, a 30-year-old officer who has been with the Atlanta Police Department since September 2019. Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said Matthews was shot in the arm and is expected to fully recover.
Officials said police had responded to the home several times before for mental health calls, including previous responses by Matthews. The GBI is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while Atlanta police are investigating an aggravated assault.
