Teen dies after fall during urban exploration of abandoned New Orleans high-rise
A Louisiana teenager has died after falling from a higher floor at the abandoned Plaza Tower high-rise in New Orleans while exploring it with a group of teens, according to police. A second teen suffered injuries while exploring.
The 911 call came in at about 12:04 a.m. Sunday, after the teenagers gained access to the fenced property and entered the building. Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said the group was going up a stairwell when one of the teens fell from a higher floor.
Responding EMS personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The victim was not immediately identified.
“They did a little urban exploring,” Kirkpatrick said. “The staircase, to my understanding, doesn’t have railings, and one of them did fall.”
Another teenager suffered cuts to his arm and wrist while inside the building and was taken to University Medical Center for treatment. The injuries were sustained while the teen was moving through the dangerous, abandoned building.
The number of teenagers at the scene was not immediately known, as some may have left before officers arrived. They were believed to be between 16 and 17 years old.
Kirkpatrick said investigators are still reviewing the circumstances of the fall and have not ruled out whether the building’s owner could face charges.
Plaza Tower, at 1001 Howard Ave. in downtown New Orleans, has been vacant for more than two decades. City officials have said the building has continued to deteriorate and poses a risk to the public.
