Pre-evacuation warning issued after HAZMAT incident in Colorado Springs

A pre-evacuation warning has been issued after a fire involving chemical gas broke out at a Microchip facility in Colorado Springs, according to local fire officials. HAZMAT crews are at the scene.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department said shortly after 4 p.m. local time on Sunday that the fire was isolated to an area of the facility which contained chemical gas. Several fire crews are responding to the incident, and officials asked people to avoid the area.

The pre-evacuation warning covers Tenderfoot Hill Road between Venetucci Boulevard and Tenderfoot Hill Street. KXRM reported that the fire was near 1150 East Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard.

Residents in the warning area have not been ordered to leave, but have been told to be prepared to evacuate if necessary. Anyone who is in danger or needs additional time or assistance to evacuate has been advised to leave immediately.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire or whether anyone was injured.
