The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has become the second deadliest ever recorded, killing over 2,300 people and infecting nearly 5,000 others since it began just over three months ago.

According to figures compiled by BNO News as of Sunday, the outbreak has resulted in 4,945 confirmed cases and 2,325 deaths in the DRC. Another 306 suspected cases are under investigation, while at least 1,040 patients have recovered.

The latest daily update includes 102 new confirmed cases, 53 additional deaths and 34 recoveries. The death rate among confirmed cases stands at 47 percent.

The outbreak began in the Mongbwalu health zone in Ituri Province and has since spread to six provinces. Ituri remains the epicenter.

The outbreak became the largest ever recorded in the DRC two weeks ago, when the number of confirmed cases surpassed the 3,317 reported during the 2018-2020 Ebola outbreak in Kivu.

That Kivu outbreak, which killed 2,287 people, had been the second deadliest Ebola outbreak on record. Only the 2014-2016 epidemic in West Africa was deadlier, killing 11,310 people across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Across all affected countries, 4,966 cases and 2,327 deaths have been reported. This includes 20 cases and two deaths in Uganda, as well as one case in France.
