Karoline Leavitt to step down as White House press secretary
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will step down at the end of August to spend more time with her two young children, President Trump announced. Leavitt, the youngest person to hold the position, will continue working for Trump as one of his top outside advisors.
“Our wonderful White House Press Secretary, and one of my most trusted aides, Karoline Leavitt, will be departing her role at the end of the month so she can spend more time with her beautiful young children and family, a decision I totally understand and respect!,” Trump said in a social media post Wednesday.
“Karoline has been a real leader in the White House, and has done a phenomenal job fighting for Justice, Liberty, and Freedom,” Trump added. “Karoline has been one of the best White House Press Secretaries in the History of the Office.”
Leavitt, 28, has served as White House press secretary since Trump returned to office in January 2025. She previously worked in the White House during Trump’s first term and later served as national press secretary for his 2024 presidential campaign.
“Serving as the White House Press Secretary over the past year and a half has been the honor and adventure of a lifetime,” Leavitt said in a statement. She thanked Trump for giving her the opportunity to speak on his behalf from the White House podium, travel around the world and spend time in the Oval Office.
Leavitt welcomed her second child, a baby girl named Viviana, or “Vivi,” on May 1 and briefly took maternity leave before returning to the White House.
“Since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary,” she said.
Leavitt said Trump asked her to continue serving as a top outside advisor and that she will remain a vocal supporter of the MAGA movement and the Republican Party.
“My fight is entering a new phase, but it is far from over,” she said.
