Indian man arrested in Germany after killing girlfriend in Tucson, Arizona
An Indian man wanted for the murder of his 19-year-old girlfriend in Tucson, Arizona, was arrested in Germany while attempting to escape to India, according to police.
The investigation began at about 4 p.m. on Thursday when family members requested a welfare check at an apartment at 1701 N. Tyndall Avenue, according to the Tucson Police Department. Members of the fire department entered the apartment and found Julissa Rubi Salazar dead.
Medics observed signs of trauma and called police to the apartment. Homicide detectives processed the scene, conducted interviews and examined forensic evidence before identifying Salazar’s boyfriend, Varun Batchigari, as the suspect.
Police said Batchigari traveled to Tucson International Airport on the same day Salazar was found and boarded a flight to Germany, where he planned to continue to India.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging Batchigari with first-degree murder and kidnapping. Tucson police coordinated with the FBI’s Tucson office and its legal attaché in Berlin, and Batchigari was taken into custody when he arrived in Germany.
Batchigari is awaiting extradition to Arizona, where he will be booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Complex.
