Large power outage hits parts of Kenya, including Nairobi
Large parts of Kenya, including the capital Nairobi, lost electricity on Wednesday night due to an unexplained power outage, according to the country’s national utility. Crews are working to gradually restore service.
Kenya Power reported the outage at 9:05 p.m. local time, saying it was affecting Nairobi, the coastal region, central Kenya and parts of the Rift Valley. Western Kenya and parts of the northern Rift Valley remained connected to the power supply.
The utility issued two updates over the next hour as electricity was gradually restored. In its latest update at 10:11 p.m., Kenya Power said three substations had been energized, allowing service to begin returning to parts of Nairobi and the Central Rift region.
“Other areas will follow progressively,” the company said. It did not disclose the cause of the outage or estimate when power would be fully restored.
Kenya has experienced several large-scale blackouts in recent years, including two widespread outages within a week in August and September 2024. The second was blamed on failures involving two transmission lines, which caused part of the country’s power grid to collapse.
