3 men plead guilty in plot to travel overseas and join ISIS
Three men have pleaded guilty to federal terrorism charges after two of them planned to travel overseas to join ISIS and the third provided $500 to help pay for one of their flights, according to prosecutors.
Tomas-Kaan Jimenez-Guzel, 19, and Milo Sedarat, 21, both from Montclair, New Jersey, entered their pleas on Monday and Tuesday in federal court in Newark. Saed Ali Mirreh, 20, of Kent, Washington, pleaded guilty last Wednesday in Seattle.
Jimenez-Guzel and Mirreh admitted to conspiring to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), while Sedarat pleaded guilty to concealing material support for the terrorist group.
Prosecutors said Jimenez-Guzel, Mirreh and others communicated through encrypted messaging apps between July and November 2025 and agreed to fly to Turkey before continuing to “sham,” an Arabic term for the historical region of greater Syria, to join ISIS as fighters.
On October 18, Sedarat gave Jimenez-Guzel $500 in cash to help Mirreh buy a plane ticket. Sedarat instructed Jimenez-Guzel to leave his phone behind and used cash instead of an electronic transfer to hide the payment from law enforcement, according to court documents.
Jimenez-Guzel transferred the money to Mirreh eight days later. Both men subsequently bought tickets to Istanbul, with Jimenez-Guzel scheduled to leave Newark on November 17 and Mirreh scheduled to depart Seattle the previous day.
They moved up their travel plans after several people they had been communicating with in Dearborn, Michigan, were arrested on October 31 in connection with an alleged plot to carry out an attack for ISIS.
Jimenez-Guzel was arrested on November 4 after arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport. Mirreh, who had booked a new flight to Turkey for the following day, was arrested later that evening at his home in Washington.
Jimenez-Guzel and Mirreh each face up to 20 years in prison, while Sedarat faces up to 10 years. The three men are scheduled to be sentenced between October and December.
