General Motors (GM) announced it is increasing production of its light-duty trucks following President Donald Trump’s announcement this week of wide-ranging tariffs. The plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, will see increases in production and employment.

Earlier in April, GM announced that its U.S. sales increased by 17% in the first quarter, asserting that it continues to be the market leader in full-size pickups.

Hours after President Donald Trump announced his wide-scale tariff plan, General Motors (GM) announced its plans to boost production of light-duty trucks in the United States. The auto giant cited support for current manufacturing and business needs.
Fox Business reported that GM is adding several hundred temporary workers to maximize the production of light-duty trucks at its Fort Wayne, Indiana, assembly plant.
What trucks does GM make at the Fort Wayne plant ?
The Fort Wayne plant is a key location for General Motors. Workers there make the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks. In 2023, GM unveiled a $632 million investment in the production of the next generation internal combustion engine full-size light-duty trucks at the facility.
How have GM sales been this year ?
Earlier in April, GM announced that its U.S. sales increased 17 % in the first quarter, with double-digit gains across all four of the company brands: Chevy, Cadillac, GMC and Buick. A company press release said it continues to be the market leader in full-size pickups.
Trump has imposed 25% tariffs on foreign-made automobiles as part of his Made-in-America agenda. He believes it will lead to investment in auto factories and boost production. Trump also said his plan should increase sales of American-made vehicles and lead to the relocation of manufacturing plants from countries such as Mexico and Canada.
What effect will the increased production have on employment ?
Reuters reported it viewed a webcast sent by management to GM employees at the Fort Wayne plant on Thursday, telling them of the increased production of light trucks. Reuters also reported that 225 to 250 jobs will be added in addition to the temporary workers hired.
