Indiana woman sentenced for threatening to kill Rep. Nancy Mace
An Indiana woman has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for repeatedly threatening to kill U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, according to prosecutors.
Shayla Addison, 28, of Indianapolis, was sentenced to 27 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to two counts of influencing a federal official by threat, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana.
The threats began at about 8:53 a.m. on January 15, 2025, when Addison sent five text messages to the lawmaker’s campaign phone number, including: “Come outside b**** we’ll kill you” and “Tread lightly.”
Minutes later, Addison sent more threats to the lawmaker’s campaign email address. “We will kill you and blow that whole building up b**** come outside,” one message said.
Addison also posted threatening comments on the lawmaker’s Instagram account that day, including: “Shut up h** I’ll kill you” and “I hope you got mace… cause you gone need it.”
Court documents said Addison sent the messages to retaliate against Mace over the performance of her official duties. Prosecutors did not specify which of the congresswoman’s actions led to the threats.
Addison had previously been convicted of intimidation and invasion of privacy in three separate cases. In September 2019, she repeatedly called a Firehouse Subs restaurant in Hendricks County, where her former boyfriend worked, and threatened to blow up or shoot up the store.
The threats continued the following morning when she sent a message saying people would arrive at 1 p.m. to shoot up the restaurant. Prosecutors said the calls began after her former boyfriend announced that he and his new girlfriend were having a child.
Less than three months later, Addison called the same restaurant more than 50 times in one day.
In September 2023, police responded to Addison’s mother’s apartment after she threatened to burn it down and poured gasoline on the front steps. Officers found Addison sitting in a car with an open gas can on the front seat.
“Threats of political violence regardless of where they come from, or who is targeted, are unacceptable and constitute a serious federal crime,” U.S. Attorney Tom Wheeler said.
