A Mexican journalist is missing after armed masked men forced their way into her home in Veracruz, Mexico, and reportedly abducted her in an incident captured on video from inside the residence, according to state prosecutors and local media.

The abduction happened Tuesday morning in Nanchital, a community in southern Veracruz state, along Mexico’s Gulf coast. The journalist has been identified as Roxana Berenice Guzmán Ramírez, director of the news site ‘Pulso Informativo del Sureste.’

The state prosecutor’s office said they have opened an investigation into her abduction and are working to locate her and identify those responsible. No arrest have been reported.

A video shared by several Mexican media outlets was recorded from inside the home during the incident, though it was unclear whether Guzmán was filming.

The video shows masked men in tactical uniforms smashing the glass on the front door as they tried to get inside, while a man in the home pleaded with them to calm down and warned that an infant was inside.

After breaking through the glass, the men forced the door open and entered the home, pointing rifles at people inside and at the person recording before the video cut off.

One of the gunmen appeared to have a Mexican flag patch on his uniform, similar to those worn by security forces, but no government agency has said its personnel were involved.

“We are concerned by reports of the disappearance and possible kidnapping of journalist Roxana Guzmán Ramírez in Veracruz,” said the Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, which is part of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH). “We urge authorities to strengthen search operations, investigate the case and punish those responsible.”

Authorities have not released information about a possible motive. Guzmán’s whereabouts remain unknown.

Mexico has long been one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, especially local reporters covering crime, corruption and public officials. Press freedom group Articulo 19 has documented at least 176 journalists killed in Mexico since 2000.
