The United States carried out “defensive” strikes in Bandar Abbas, Iran, after missiles were reported to have struck an air base in the area, according to reports.

The reported strike happened on Wednesday at Bandar Abbas Air Base, in southern Iran near the Strait of Hormuz.

A U.S. official told Faytuks Network that the strikes were part of a “defensive operation” in Bandar Abbas and said they were carried out to protect U.S. interests in the region. The official said the operation does not affect the ceasefire.

Earlier, preliminary reports said several missiles had struck the air base. “Moments ago, the impact of 3 missiles on Bandar Abbas Air Base,” a journalist close to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said, according to Faytuks News.

The reports did not identify what was targeted or whether there were casualties or damage, while other reports indicated that Iranian air defenses had been activated.

The operation comes two days after U.S. forces carried out what the U.S. military described as “self-defense” strikes in southern Iran, targeting missile launch sites and Iranian boats that were allegedly attempting to place mines.

A senior U.S. official told Fox News at the time that two Iranian boats had been caught laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz and that the U.S. military eliminated both IRGC vessels.

The same official said U.S. forces also struck a surface-to-air missile site in Bandar Abbas that was targeting U.S. warplanes.

“These were defensive strikes,” the official told Fox News. Two well-placed sources told the outlet the strikes did not indicate that the ceasefire was over.

President Trump said earlier this week that negotiations with Iran were continuing over a deal that would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
