One person was killed and four others were injured after a shooting in Brownsville, Tennessee, during a prom photo session, according to officials. The person who died was described by the sheriff as a young woman.”

The shooting happened Friday evening at a park in the 900 block of Key Corner Street, where Brownsville officers found four people suffering from gunshot wounds, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. All four were taken to a local hospital, where one of them was later pronounced dead.

The state bureau confirmed on Saturday that a fifth person had also been injured in the shooting. Details about the conditions of the surviving victims were not immediately released, though Haywood County Sheriff Billy Garrett Jr. said one person was left “struggling to survive.”

Garrett said the victims were taking part in a prom photo session and celebrating “a great milestone in their lives” when the shooting happened.

“The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office expresses our deepest sincerest sympathy and prayers to the family and friends of this beautiful young lady who lost her life,” Garrett said. “To all the Haywood High students and staff we extend our sympathy to you.”

“Last night’s tragedy was senseless and heartbreaking,” Brownsville Mayor William D. Rawls said. “What was supposed to be a memorable and joyful night for the Class of 2026 was taken away by reckless gun violence. No family, student, or member of our community should ever have to experience this kind of pain during a time that should be filled with celebration and hope.”

No arrests were immediately announced, and officials have not released details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
