Tornado leaves multiple homes destroyed near Enid, Oklahoma
A tornado emergency was issued for parts of northern Oklahoma after a confirmed tornado moved near Enid, destroying multiple homes, officials and local media said. It was not immediately clear if anyone had been injured.
The warning was issued Thursday evening for areas including Enid, Breckinridge and Fairmont, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Norman. The agency warned that the storm was life-threatening and capable of producing a damaging tornado and golf ball-sized hail.
“At 8:21 p.m., a confirmed strong tornado will move across southeastern parts of the city of Enid,” the NWS said. “This tornado is also heading in the direction of Fairmont.”
The tornado emergency listed 28,569 people, 13 schools and four hospitals in the potential exposure area.
At 8:40 p.m., the weather service said the tornado was moving across the far southeastern parts of Enid. “Although the rotation is not as strong, this tornado will still do significant damage,” the NWS said.
KWTV reported that the tornado destroyed multiple homes, and one reporter said they saw a car being thrown. It was not immediately clear if anyone had been injured.
