Eight children were killed and three other people were injured in a domestic violence shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, before the suspect was neutralized by police, according to officials.

The shootings happened just after 6 a.m. on Sunday and involved multiple locations in Shreveport, including Harrison Street and the 300 block of West 79th Street, police said.

Investigators said the suspect first shot an adult woman on Harrison Street before going to a residence on West 79th Street, where eight children were killed. The children were between about 1 and 14 years old.

A second woman and a teenage victim were also injured at the residence. Police said both adult women were taken to a hospital in critical condition, while the minor’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Corporal Chris Bordelon said investigators believe the suspect was the only person who fired shots during the incident. He said some of the children who were killed were the suspect’s descendants.

After leaving the scene, the suspect carjacked an adult male at gunpoint near Linwood Avenue and West 79th Street. Officers later located the stolen vehicle and chased it into Bossier Parish.

Police said officers there opened fire, killing the suspect. Louisiana State Police is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity, which is being withheld until next-of-kin notifications are completed for all victims.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy that has deeply impacted our entire community,” police said in a statement. “The loss of these young lives is devastating, and our hearts are with the families affected.”
