Tanker hit by projectile north of Doha, Qatar
A tanker has been hit by an unknown projectile north of Doha, Qatar, causing damage to the vessel, according to a warning from the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). No injuries have been reported.
The incident was reported at 1:35 a.m. on Wednesday local time, about 17 nautical miles north of Doha, according to UKMTO, the British military’s maritime security coordination center. The vessel has not been publicly identified.
UKMTO said the ship’s company security officer reported that the projectile struck the tanker on the port side, damaging the hull above the waterline. It said there was no environmental impact and that authorities were investigating.
The incident came a day after another projectile struck a tanker off Dubai and caused a fire on board. Kuwait Petroleum Corporation later said that vessel was the VLCC Al-Salmi, a large crude carrier, and accused Iran of carrying out a direct attack while the ship was at anchorage outside Dubai.
Kuwait Petroleum said the crew brought the fire under control in coordination with UAE authorities. It said no injuries were reported among the 24 crew members and that there was no oil spill or environmental damage.
The new strike happened as shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz remains under pressure during the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.
