Colombia Air Force plane carrying 110 people crashes in south
A Hercules C-130 plane owned by the Colombian Air Force has crashed in the south of the country near the border with Peru, killing an unknown number of people, according to local officials. At least 110 people were reportedly on board.
The crash happened at around 9 a.m. on Monday when the four-engine military transport plane was trying to take off from an airfield near Puerto Leguízamo, a town in the Putumayo region, close to the border with Peru.
Defense Minister Pedro Arnulfo Sánchez said the plane was carrying troops but did not provide information about the number of people involved. Local media said 110 service members were on board.
“Military units are already at the scene of the incident; however, the exact number of victims and the causes of the crash have not yet been determined,” Sanchez said in a statement.
Footage taken by witnesses showed a fire burning at the crash site. Most of the aircraft appeared to have been destroyed.
“I express my most sincere condolences to the families of those affected and, in respect for their pain, I call for avoiding speculation until official information is available,” Sanchez said. “It is a deeply painful event for the country. May our prayers accompany and, to some extent, alleviate the sorrow.”
