Oversight Committee pauses Clinton hearing after Rep. Boebert leaks photo
The House Oversight Committee has resumed its deposition of Hillary Clinton after a brief pause after Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., sent a photo of the closed-door proceedings to a conservative influencer, The Associated Press reports.
Conservative YouTuber Benny Johnson posted Boebert’s photo online, citing her as the source. She responded after the media reported the news, saying Johnson did nothing wrong and that the hearings are resuming. The pause lasted about 40 minutes.
Committee chair Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., said they are recording the hearing and that it would be released after Clinton’s lawyers look at it. The committee banned anyone from photographing the hearing.
The sessions are taking place in Chappaqua, New York, near her home, following months of negotiations between attorneys and committee leaders. Lawmakers voted last July to subpoena both as part of Congress’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and his longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell.
What did Hillary Clinton say at the hearing?
While the committee has not released any details of the hearing, Clinton did post her opening statement shortly after it began. In her post, she said she had never met Epstein, which she had previously said in written statements to the committee.
“The Committee justified its subpoena to me based on its assumption that I have information regarding the investigations into the criminal activities of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell,” she wrote. “Let me be as clear as I can. I do not.”
Clinton wrote that she had no memory of “encountering” Epstein, flying on his plane or visiting any place he owned, including his notorious island. She also took issue with how the committee has conducted the investigation, calling it a “cover-up.” She said the American people deserve to have a full investigation into Epstein’s connections.
“If the majority were serious, it would not waste time on fishing expeditions,” Clinton wrote. “There is too much that needs to be done.”
