2 killed, 3 critically injured in shooting at Rhode Island ice arena; suspect found dead
Two people have been killed and three others are in critical condition after a shooting during a hockey game at an ice arena in Rhode Island, according to officials. The suspected gunman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The shooting occurred Monday afternoon at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, a city in northern Rhode Island near Providence. Police said officers received a call at about 2:30 p.m. reporting an active shooter.
Two people were found dead inside the building, including the suspected gunman. An additional victim later died at a hospital after being transported from the scene.
Three others were shot and have been hospitalized in critical condition. The two victims who died inside the arena appeared to be adults, according to police chief Goncalves.
“It appears this was a targeted event, that it may be a family dispute,” she said, adding that authorities have not released the victims’ names while families are being notified.
NBC10 reported, citing a law enforcement source, that investigators believe the suspect was the father of some of those present at the game and that he intentionally targeted family members in attendance. The station also reported that the man may have been wearing women’s clothing at the time of the shooting.
Video from a live stream of the game captured between 15 and 20 gunshots. The footage shows the gunman firing before several bystanders move toward him in an apparent attempt to subdue him. Authorities have not publicly detailed what occurred during that confrontation.
