2 killed, 5 wounded in separate shootings near Super Bowl host city
Two men were killed and five other people were wounded in two separate shootings in downtown San Jose, California, that happened as the area saw an influx of visitors for Super Bowl events nearby, according to officials.
Sgt. Jorge Garibay of the San Jose Police Department said officers responded at about 2:20 a.m. Sunday to the 100 block of Paseo de San Antonio after a report of a shooting. He said two adult male victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
An arrest was made, with the suspect taken into custody away from the scene later in the day. The identities of the victims and the suspect have not been released.
Garibay said a “physical altercation” happened before the shooting and investigators do not have an indication that the victims and the suspect knew each other.
“We don’t have any indication that this was related to any of the Super Bowl events,” he said, adding that police believed there was only one shooter. The San Jose Police Department said the double-fatal shooting brought the city’s homicide count to two and three for the year.
In a separate shooting, Garibay said officers responded at about 10:47 p.m. Sunday to the area of North Market and West Santa Clara streets after a report of gunfire. He said five adults were wounded, four males and one female, and all are expected to survive.
Garibay said three victims were transported from the scene and two others reached hospitals on their own or with assistance from others. He said investigators have not identified a suspect but believe there is “significant video evidence” because of the number of people downtown where the shooting occurred.
He said the shooting happened on the street or sidewalk after another “significant physical altercation,” adding that early reports suggesting it occurred inside a restaurant or bar were incorrect and stemmed from victims fleeing in different directions. Police believe there was only one shooter.
Garibay said the two incidents were unrelated, not believed to be gang-related at this point, and there was no indication they were connected to Super Bowl events.
The Super Bowl was played Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, neighboring San Jose.
